Total the CFM of the tools that actually run at the same time, add the booth and blow-off load, then add about 30 percent headroom: most 2 to 4 bay shops land at 5 to 10 HP, and shops with a busy booth or blast cabinet at 15 to 25 HP. If a painter wears a supplied-air respirator in your booth, OSHA 1910.134 requires Grade D breathing air per CGA G-7.1, with carbon monoxide monitoring on oil-lubricated compressors. Shop air straight off the compressor does not qualify. The full requirement is on our breathing air page.
Fisheyes and blushing in a finish usually trace back to water or oil in the air line. A refrigerated dryer holding a 38 F class dew point, a filter train at the booth, and auto drains on the receiver are the standard fix, and cheaper than one repaint on a customer car.
OSHA 1910.242(b) limits cleaning blow-off to 30 psi when dead-ended. Relief-style safety nozzles on shop blow guns keep full flow for drying panels while staying compliant during an inspection.

A common scenario in Midwest body shops starts with paint defects and tools losing torque at the busiest bays. A walk-through often finds an aging piston compressor at 100 percent duty, no dryer, and water pooling in the booth regulator every Monday after weekend humidity soaks the tank. A typical Brabazon project replaces it with a shop-class Sullair rotary screw and a cycling dryer, re-pipes the drops to come off the top of the header, and adds a Grade D breathing air panel with CO monitoring at the booth. Once that is in place the moisture-related repaints stop, and shops usually put the equipment on a Brabazon preventive maintenance schedule to keep it that way.

A 2 bay mechanical shop typically runs well on 5 to 7.5 HP delivering 18 to 28 CFM, and a 4 bay shop on 7.5 to 10 HP. Add a paint booth or blast cabinet and the number jumps: booths commonly add 15 to 30 CFM while spraying. Total the tools you actually run at once, then add about 30 percent headroom.
Compressing air concentrates its humidity, and a working shop compressor can condense gallons of water on a humid day. The fix is a refrigerated dryer after the compressor, auto drains on the tank, and drops that come off the top of the pipe run. A small shop using air in short bursts is often better served by a two-stage piston, which we will tell you straight.
