Sullair Preventive Maintenance: What the Manufacturer Requires

Sullair specifies preventive maintenance intervals based on operating hours, not calendar time — because a compressor running 24/7 requires service more frequently than one running a single shift. Standard Sullair PM intervals are 2,000 hours for fluid and filter changes (approximately quarterly for continuous-duty operation) and 8,000 hours for separator element replacement and major inspection.

The Sullair SUPERVISOR controller tracks operating hours and alerts operators when service intervals are approaching. Common Sullair Problems and What They Mean

High temperature shutdown: The most common Sullair service call. Causes include contaminated or degraded SulPro fluid that's lost its heat-transfer capacity, blocked cooler fins from accumulated debris, a faulty thermostatic valve not routing fluid through the cooler, inadequate compressor room ventilation, or a failing cooling fan motor. Brabazon technicians diagnose the specific cause — not just reset the thermal protection and hope it doesn't recur.

Oil carryover into compressed air: If you're seeing oil downstream of your Sullair — in drain traps, on pneumatic equipment, or in process output — the most likely cause is a failed or overdue air/oil separator element. Secondary causes include operating at below-design pressure (causing oil to pass through the separator at lower velocity than it was designed for) or a cracked or improperly seated separator element housing.

SUPERVISOR controller faults: Sullair's SUPERVISOR controller provides detailed fault codes that Brabazon technicians are trained to interpret accurately. Common fault codes include temperature alerts (indicating cooler, fluid, or ventilation issues), pressure differential alerts (indicating filter or separator restriction), and overload protection trips (indicating motor or electrical system issues). Brabazon has the diagnostic tools and brand-specific training to resolve SUPERVISOR faults correctly — not just reset them.

Airend efficiency loss: Sullair airends are designed for very long service life — many Sullair airends run for 40,000 hours or more before rebuild is required. When efficiency drops below acceptable levels (indicated by higher-than-normal amp draw, reduced CFM output at operating pressure, or rising operating temperature with clean fluid and coolers), it's typically time for an airend inspection and rebuild. Brabazon performs Sullair airend rebuilds using OEM parts and manufacturer-specified clearances.

Sullair Parts: OEM vs. Aftermarket

One of the most consequential decisions in Sullair maintenance is whether to use OEM Sullair parts or aftermarket alternatives. For routine consumables like fluid, filter elements, and separator elements, the quality differential between OEM and reputable aftermarket parts is manageable — though Sullair's SulPro fluid is specifically formulated for Sullair airend tolerances and provides better protection than generic alternatives.

For critical components — separator elements, thermal valves, shaft seals, and controller components — OEM Sullair parts are strongly recommended. Substandard separator elements allow oil carryover that contaminates your process and accelerates downstream equipment wear. Thermal valves with incorrect operating temperatures cause chronic overheating or inefficient cooling. The cost differential between OEM and cheap aftermarket parts is small compared to the cost of the problems they can cause.
