Every pneumatic tool has a nameplate CFM: a 90 lb breaker runs about 90 CFM, a rock drill 100 to 200, a blast nozzle 150 to 350 depending on orifice. Add the tools that run at the same time, then add altitude and hose-loss margin. That total picks the portable class, not the engine badge.
Equipment working a MSHA-regulated site needs the site basics handled: guarded drives and couplings, serviced fire suppression where required, and operators trained under Part 46 or Part 48. We prep units for mine-site deployment and document the service history your safety department will ask for.
Diesel portables make hot, wet air. Blasting and coating work needs an aftercooler and water separator at minimum, and coating specs often require a desiccant trailer to keep moisture out of the abrasive and off the fresh surface. Treatment is specified per job, not bolted on after a failed holiday test.
A pit pump is sized from measured or estimated inflow GPM plus total head, with solids handling matched to the water. Undersized dewatering does not just slow the job: it puts crews in water and undermines excavation walls. We size from your inflow numbers and stock trash and submersible units.

A common scenario in bridge deck demolition is a crew running two aging 160 CFM units and spending mornings rotating breakers on and off hoses to keep pressure up. A typical Brabazon project swaps both for a single Sullair 375 on a monthly rental with an aftercooler for the saw crew, so every breaker and saw on the deck runs simultaneously for the rest of the job. A 60 lb breaker runs about 60 to 70 CFM and a 90 lb breaker about 90 CFM at 90 to 100 psi. That is why a 185 class portable is the standard one-breaker or two-breaker unit: it carries the tools plus hose losses with margin left for a second small tool.
Rent below roughly 60 percent utilization over the year, buy above it. A unit that works a few months per season almost always pencils out better as a rental with maintenance included, while a unit on site most of the year earns its purchase price. We run the numbers both ways before quoting.
Blast air is set by nozzle orifice: a number 6 nozzle at 100 psi pulls about 250 CFM, which is 375 class territory once hose losses are counted, and larger nozzles or dual outfits move to 750 class units. Blasting also needs an aftercooler and moisture separation so the abrasive stays dry.
