How this is calculated
- Rental total = monthly rate x months. Service is included in the rate.
- Ownership total = purchase price + prorated maintenance (annual cost x months / 12) - resale value at the end of the period.
- If financed: payments made over the period plus the remaining loan principal replace the purchase price, using the standard amortization formula M = P x r / (1 - (1 + r)^-n) with monthly rate r = APR / 12.
- Resale default: 60% of purchase price at 12 months, declining 8 percentage points per additional year (prorated monthly). You can override it.
- Break-even = the first month where cumulative rental cost exceeds cumulative ownership cost, using the same resale decline at each month.
