How a centrifugal pump makes head
A centrifugal pump spins an impeller that flings liquid outward, converting velocity into pressure as the flow slows in the volute or diffuser. Head rises with impeller diameter and speed, and staging impellers in series builds high pressure in a compact frame. Because the pump has no positive sealing between suction and discharge, its output is set by where the system resistance crosses the pump curve, so the piping and the pump have to be designed together.
Sizing a centrifugal pump correctly
- Operating point. Fix the required flow and total dynamic head, then select a pump whose curve passes near best efficiency at that point.
- Suction conditions. Check net positive suction head available against required so the pump does not cavitate; long lifts and hot liquids need attention here.
- Fluid. Verify viscosity, temperature, and any solids, since even modest viscosity or grit changes the curve and the wear picture.
- Turndown and control. If demand varies, consider a variable speed drive or a booster set rather than throttling a fixed-speed pump off its curve.
- Materials and seal. Match wetted metallurgy and seal type to the fluid and temperature.

What causes a centrifugal pump to lose flow or head?

Can a centrifugal pump run against a closed valve?
No, a centrifugal pump should not run for long against a fully closed discharge valve because the trapped liquid heats up and can flash to vapor, damaging the seal and impeller. Brief operation during startup is normal, but sustained deadhead needs a minimum-flow bypass or a control scheme.
