Do I need a diaphragm pump or a centrifugal pump?
Choose an air operated diaphragm pump when the fluid is abrasive, viscous, laden with solids, or chemically aggressive, or when the pump must run dry or deadhead without damage. Choose a centrifugal pump when the flow is clean, steady, and high, because a centrifugal is cheaper to run and to maintain at volume. How an AODD pump works
An air operated diaphragm pump uses two flexible diaphragms driven back and forth by shop compressed air through an air distribution valve. As one diaphragm pulls fluid in, the other pushes fluid out, and a set of check valve balls keeps the flow moving in one direction. Because compressed air does the work, there is no motor, no rotating shaft seal, and no close-tolerance impeller in contact with the fluid. That is why an AODD pump tolerates dry running, self-primes from a dry line, and can sit deadheaded against a closed discharge valve while it simply stalls and waits.
When a diaphragm pump is the right call
- Abrasive slurries and grit-laden fluids that would erode a rotating pump quickly.
- Viscous or shear-sensitive products where gentle, low-shear pumping matters.
- Solvents, acids, and caustics, matched with the right body and diaphragm material.

Sizing and specification checklist
Diaphragm pump performance is a moving target because output depends on both the fluid and the air supply. Work through these before selecting a model:
- Flow and head. AODD flow falls as discharge head rises, so state the real total dynamic head, not just the vertical lift.
- Air supply. Note your available line air pressure and volume, because the same pump gives different flow on 60 psi than on 100 psi.
- Fluid character. Viscosity, solids size, abrasiveness, and chemistry drive the port size and material choices.
- Materials. Match body material and diaphragm elastomer to the fluid for chemical compatibility and diaphragm life.
- Duty cycle. Continuous high-flow duty runs up air cost, so verify the AODD is the economical choice at your run hours.
Service and wear
The wear items on an AODD pump are the diaphragms, the check valve balls and seats, and the air distribution valve. Diaphragm life tracks the elastomer fit to the fluid, the stroke rate, and the discharge pressure, so a pump that is right-sized and matched to the chemistry runs far longer between kits. Why does a diaphragm pump go through a lot of compressed air?
A diaphragm pump uses compressed air as its motive power, so it trades electrical simplicity for air consumption. Air use climbs as discharge pressure rises and when the pump is oversized for the duty. Right-sizing the pump, running it at the lowest air pressure that meets the flow, and specifying an efficient air distribution valve all cut consumption. On steady high-flow duty a centrifugal pump is often cheaper to run.
What are the common failure points on an AODD pump?
Diaphragms, check valve balls and seats, and the air distribution valve are the usual wear items on an AODD pump. Diaphragm life depends on the material fit to the fluid, the stroke frequency, and the discharge pressure. Ball and seat wear shows up as lost prime or reduced flow.
