A lift station collects wastewater in a wet well and pumps it up to a higher gravity sewer or treatment stage whenever the level rises. Level controls start and stop the pumps, alternate them to share wear, and sound an alarm if the level climbs too high. Most stations run submersible pumps on guide rails so a pump can be lifted out without entering the well, while some use dry-pit pumps in a separate chamber for easier access.
