Single Stage vs Two Stage Air Compressor: Which Do You Need?

What is the difference between single stage and two stage?

A single stage compressor squeezes air once, from atmosphere to about 125 psi, and suits intermittent shop work. A two stage compressor squeezes twice, cooling the air in an intercooler between stages, which reaches 175 psi and up, runs cooler, and holds up to continuous duty. If your tools need more than 125 psi or run most of every hour, go two stage; otherwise the cheaper single stage machine is usually the right buy.

How each design works

In a single stage machine, every piston stroke takes air from atmospheric pressure to final pressure in one compression. That single big squeeze generates a lot of heat, which limits pressure and duty cycle. A two stage machine compresses to an intermediate pressure in a large cylinder, cools the air through an intercooler, then compresses it again in a smaller cylinder. Splitting the work and cooling in between wastes less energy as heat, produces drier air, and lets the machine work harder for longer.

Is a two stage air compressor always better than a single stage?

No. Two stage machines cost more and only pay back when you need pressure above roughly 125 psi or long continuous duty. A body shop running an impact wrench a few minutes an hour is better served by a single stage unit, while a production line feeding air all shift belongs on two stage or on a rotary screw.

How can I tell if my compressor is single stage or two stage?

Count the cylinder sizes and look for an intercooler line. A two stage piston machine has a large low pressure cylinder and a smaller high pressure cylinder connected by a finned intercooler tube, and its pressure rating is typically 175 psi. A single stage unit has same size cylinders and usually tops out near 125 to 135 psi.

When should I skip pistons entirely and buy a rotary screw?

When your duty cycle passes roughly 60 to 70 percent, meaning air is drawn most of every hour. Piston machines need rest time to shed heat, while a rotary screw is designed to run loaded continuously and delivers quieter, drier air.
