Do I need an oil-free compressor, or is oil-flooded with filtration enough?

Oil-free Class 0 is mandatory where compressed air can touch product or people: direct food contact, pharmaceutical production, medical air, and breathing air. For most general manufacturing, a modern oil-flooded rotary screw with proper filtration delivers the air quality the application requires at meaningfully lower cost. The deciding question is whether a trace of oil in the line is a quality incident or a regulatory violation; if it is neither, oil-flooded usually wins on total cost. As one of the Midwest's oil free compressor manufacturers' partners, Brabazon can size either path honestly against your process.

Oil-Free Air Compressors - Clean Air for Critical Applications

Oil-free air compressors deliver 100% clean, contaminant-free compressed air - essential in industries where even trace amounts of oil can compromise product quality, safety, or regulatory compliance. Brabazon Pump, Compressor & Vacuum provides oil-free compressor solutions for pharmaceutical, food and beverage, electronics, medical, laboratory, and other sensitive-process industries throughout the Midwest.

Unlike standard compressors, oil-free models use alternative technologies - such as water injection, Teflon-coated components, or dry-running scroll mechanisms - to compress air without any lubricant contaminating the air stream. This eliminates the risk of product contamination and reduces the cost of downstream filtration equipment.

Brabazon stocks and services oil-free compressors from leading manufacturers and can help you select the right model based on your CFM requirements, pressure rating, duty cycle, and application. We also offer oil-free compressor rentals for short-term needs or production surges, with fast delivery throughout our service territory.

Where Class 0 is the requirement, not the upgrade

These applications either regulate oil content directly or carry recall-level consequences for contamination:

Sullair oil free compressor lines we stock and service

We work with the leading oil free compressor manufacturers and carry Sullair Class 0 scroll, dry rotary screw, and centrifugal lines from lab-scale units to plant base load.

How to choose an oil free compressor

  • Start with the purity spec. If the application names ISO 8573-1 Class 0, cGMP, NFPA 99, or Grade D, a certified oil-free source is the answer. If it only names a general dew point or particulate class, oil-flooded with filtration may satisfy it.
  • Match technology to scale. Dry scroll suits labs and dental at low flow, two-stage dry rotary screw covers continuous plant air, and centrifugal takes over for high-volume base load above roughly 200 HP.
  • Size to simultaneous demand, not nameplate. Total the cfm of what runs at once, then verify against your pressure and duty cycle. Use the CFM calculator for a starting range, then have an engineer confirm it against your demand profile.
  • Plan the whole air system. Class 0 air still needs correctly sized dryers, receivers, and distribution. Compare dryer types in our refrigerated vs desiccant air dryer comparison and the guide on how to choose a compressed air dryer.

Class 0 versus oil-flooded with filtration

Factor Oil-free Class 0 Oil-flooded plus filtration
Oil in air stream None from the compressor by design Very low, but the compressor remains a potential oil source
Best fit Air that contacts product, people, or regulated processes Tools, cylinders, and general plant equipment
Upfront cost Roughly 30 to 50 percent more Lower purchase and overhaul cost
Downstream filtration Reduced, since the source is already clean Coalescing and carbon stages required to reach purity

Industries that rely on oil free air

Food and Beverage

Air that contacts product, packaging, or food-contact surfaces needs a certified oil free source. See food and beverage applications.

Pharmaceutical

cGMP cleanroom production specifies oil, particulate, and moisture limits. See pharmaceutical and medical applications.

Medical

Hospital medical air follows NFPA 99 source rules. See our medical air compressor page.

Electronics

Semiconductor and electronics assembly cannot tolerate oil residue. See electronics applications.

Oil free compressor questions, answered first

What does ISO 8573-1 Class 0 actually certify?

Class 0 certifies that the compressor adds no measurable oil aerosol, vapor, or liquid to the air stream under the test conditions of ISO 8573-1, the international compressed air purity standard. It is the strictest oil class in the standard and it applies to the compressor itself, not to filtration added downstream. A Class 1 system with filters can be very clean, but only Class 0 removes the compressor as a possible oil source.

Is there a difference between oil-free and oil-less compressors?

Yes. Oil-free machines like the Sullair DS and DSP series still use oil to lubricate gears and bearings, but the compression chamber is sealed off so no oil can touch the air. Oil-less machines have no oil anywhere in the unit, which is common in small dental or lab scroll units. For industrial flows, oil-free rotary screw and centrifugal designs are the practical choice because oil-less designs do not scale to high horsepower.

How does maintenance differ from an oil-flooded compressor?

You trade oil and separator changes for tighter attention to the airend itself. Oil-free machines skip the separator element and need far fewer oil changes, but their two-stage airends run hotter, so coolers, seals, and valves need scheduled inspection, and airend overhauls arrive sooner than on a comparable oil-flooded unit. A service agreement with factory-trained technicians keeps that schedule honest.

Why do oil-free compressors cost so much more?

The price gap comes from the hardware: two compression stages with precision-coated rotors, an interstage cooler, and high-temperature seals replace the simple oil-flooded airend, and the same is true for the larger service parts. Expect roughly 30 to 50 percent more upfront than an equivalent oil-flooded rotary screw, plus higher overhaul costs. That premium is justified when air touches product or people, and wasted when it does not.

Do you rent oil free compressors?

Yes. We offer oil free compressor rentals for short-term needs or production surges, with fast delivery throughout our service territory. Rental Class 0 units like the Sullair OFD1550 portable cover shutdown work, seasonal peaks, and bridging while a permanent machine is on order.
