The short version of how it works
Liquid enters at the base, passes up through a column of impellers and diffuser chambers, and leaves at high pressure through the discharge on the same vertical axis. Each stage adds a fixed slice of head at the design flow, so head is a matter of counting stages against a target. The inline body puts suction and discharge on the same centerline, which makes the pump easy to drop into an existing pipe run and easy to keep aligned. A cartridge seal at the top handles the shaft, and interstage bushings keep the rotor centered.

Reliability and service notes
Seals, interstage bushings, and wear rings set the service interval. Dry running and operation against a throttled discharge are the fastest ways to cook a seal, and scaling or abrasive water wears bushings and rings. Keep the pump on its curve, protect it against dead heading, and monitor vibration. What makes a vertical multistage pump different from a single-stage centrifugal?
A vertical multistage pump stacks several impellers in series on one shaft, so head builds stage by stage while the footprint stays small. A single-stage centrifugal makes its head with one impeller and tops out lower, which is fine for high-flow, low-head service but not for the high pressures a booster or boiler-feed set needs. The vertical inline body also drops into tight mechanical rooms and mounts straight into the pipe run.
How do I pick the number of stages?
Pick stages from the total head you need at your design flow, because each stage adds a fixed increment of head at that flow. Fix the flow and the required discharge pressure first, subtract the available suction pressure, and the stage count falls out of the pump curve. More stages mean more head but a taller pump and more wear parts, so size to the real duty point rather than padding it.
Does NPSH still matter on a vertical multistage pump?
Yes, NPSH still matters and is often the limiting factor on hot or boosting duty. The first-stage impeller sets the NPSH required, and if the available suction pressure is thin, on hot boiler feedwater for example, cavitation starts there regardless of how many stages follow. Confirm NPSH available exceeds NPSH required at design flow with margin, and raise suction pressure or lower the pump if it is tight.
What tends to wear on these pumps?
Mechanical seals, the interstage bushings, and the impeller wear rings take the wear on a vertical multistage pump. Running against a closed or throttled discharge, dry running, and abrasive or scaling water all shorten seal and bushing life. Steady vibration monitoring and keeping the pump on its curve, not far out to the right, are the simplest ways to extend service intervals.
